MATHENY SAYS CARPENTER IS READY FOR SECOND BASE

> Mike Matheny said today that he thinks Matt Carpenter has really taken to his new position at second base.  Of course the ultimate decision as to who the starting second baseman is will be the front office’s, but this is an encouraging sign.  With Rafael Furcal down, being able to dodge having a lineup with Daniel Descalso, Pete Kozma and the pitcher all in a row would be a very nice thing.

Math’s statement is pretty surprising considering the lengths the team went to in the offseason to find a second baseman.

> Matt Holliday is sick.

> Marc Rzepczynski is bedridden after hitting himself in the eye with an unknown object.  He won’t be throwing for a while.

> His replacement Sam Freeman will also not be throwing for a while.  He has an issue with his throwing shoulder.

> Adam Wainwright was given a picture to sign by a fan.  After looking at it, Adam remembered a part of his old delivery that he’s forgotten.  Then this afternoon, he went 4 2/3 with six strikeouts in his Spring Training outing against the Marlins.

> Matheny is headed to St. Louis to get his back fixed.

> From earlier today: Just how bad is MLB Network’s top 100 players list?

> Mark DeRosa says the wrist injury he sustained two days after arriving with the Cardinals in 2009 ruined his career.

> He’s ready.
