EVERYTHING THE CARDINALS DIDN’T DO THIS OFFSEASON

The complete scattershot accuracy of the national baseball media was put on full display this offseason, possibly more so than ever before.  In the fray, several Cardinals rumors were thrown out.

All the Cards did was sign Randy Choate and Ty Wigginton and trade Skip Schumaker.  Here are all the moves they were once rumored to make but didn’t.

11/1 “I’m hearing Ankiel is open to giving pitching one last shot since his market as a position player appears minimal. And, yes, I think the Cardinals would be among those open to providing such an opportunity. For now it remains in the rumor stage. Developing story…”

11/4The Cardinals may pursue short-term fixes at both positions rather than entrust their depth to organizational players such as Pete Kozma, Ryan Jackson or Wong.”

11/7I do believe the Cardinals’ interest in Asdrubal Cabrera real.”

12/1 “I was informed that the Cardinals have interest in left-handed pitcher Sean Burnett, who is looking to get a four-year deal.”

12/1I would think there is someone on the non-tender pile of major interest to Cardinals.”

12/1 “I would also expect Mo’ to swing a trade in Nashville.  Developing…”

12/2 “Teams that are ‘in’ on Stephen Drew, free agent shortstop: Yankees, Red Sox, Tigers, Cardinals and Athletic.”

12/2 “Cardinals believe Rafael Furcal will be okay and Pete Kozma needs more developing.  They can always trade Furcal in Spring Training or move him to second base if they get Drew.”

12/3 “The Cardinals are one of at least eight teams to reach out to the agent for lefty Sean Burnett. Talks for him are expected to pick up this week. The Cardinals have also explored available options for the middle infield, including trades.”

12/3 “Sources say the San Francisco Giants, St. Louis Cardinals, Cleveland Indians, Detroit Tigers and Yankees have ‘real interest’ in Scott Hairston.”

12/4 “Marco Scutaro would be a good fit for the Cardinals, who met with his agent tonight.  They want to get infielder and trade Skip Schumaker.”

12/4 “Hearing Rays are still in on shortstop Yunel Escobar.  Marlins “getting closer” to making a deal.  The A’s, Yankees and Cardinals are also in.”

12/5 “The Cardinals say they were never in on Scutaro before his three year, $20 million deal with the Giants.”  (That was a lie.)

12/5 “The Cardinals have explored what it would it take to sign Burnett, who is the top lefty available in the market.”

12/5 “The Cardinals have inquired about the lefty Manny Parra, according to a source with knowledge of the contact.”

12/7 “The Minnesota Twins have traded two outfielders in the past week and they turned some consideration toward Schumaker, according to a source.  The Cincinnati Reds also could be interested in Schumaker.”

12/12 “Hairston also is receiving interest from the New York Yankees, Philadelphia Phillies, San Francisco Giants and St. Louis Cardinals.”
